<div id="yui_3_2_0_94_1335365972861561">After the birth of his oldest son and discovering that little research was being conducted on Down syndrome, Jon Pierce-Shimomura was inspired to study the genetic basis for the condition in his research lab at The University of Texas at Austin. Through cutting-edge research, Pierce-Shimomura and his team isolate, modify, and observe the behavior of specific genes and hope to discover potential drug treatments. For example, a person with Down syndrome carries an extra chromosome. Pierce-Shimomura is using C. elegans, commonly known as roundworms, to test, one by one, each and every gene on the chromosome to identify which cause problems like motor-function difficulties.</div>
<div id="yui_3_2_0_94_1335365972861565">In addition to his research efforts, Pierce-Shimomura has also developed a class at The University of Texas at Austin geared toward students with disabilities.
