After the birth of his oldest son and discovering that little research was being conducted on Down syndrome, Jon Pierce-Shimomura was inspired to study the genetic basis for the condition in his research lab at The University of Texas at Austin. Through cutting-edge research, Pierce-Shimomura and his team isolate, modify, and observe the behavior of specific genes and hope to discover potential drug treatments. For example, a person with Down syndrome carries an extra chromosome. Pierce-Shimomura is using C. elegans, commonly known as roundworms, to test, one by one, each and every gene on the chromosome to identify which cause problems like motor-function difficulties.

Lions Camp for Kids with Down Syndrome

March 19, 2012 – The Texas Lions Camp is having a summer camp for kids with Down syndrome from 12-16 years of age July 15-21. There are two openings for this area and it is FREE aside from making drop off/pick up trips. Tom Westerman, a local Lion, will be happy to provide the Lion Sponsorship needed; you can reach him at 817-300-0881. Tom said that last year’s camp proved a good education for parents and campers alike, in that they learned they could be separated for that long and everything would be okay!
